What exactly is intarsia?

Intarsia is a term used to describe a number of mosaic, segmented, or marquerty artforms. In fact, the word intarsia is italian in origin and translates to "marquetry". Intarsia can be made using many different mediums but wood is the most common. A scrollsaw or similar tool is used to cut out segments of wood. Each segment is given a quality check to ensure it fits and is adjusted as needed. Then each segment is meticulously shaped and glued together to create the desired effect.

Our intarsia is not exactly 3D nor is it 2D. It is 2.5D! Each segment of wood is carefully carved and shaped to give the full project a three dimensional illusion. While the average thickness ranges from 1/2 inch to 1 1/4 inch, the way the segments are carved can make depth variation appear much greater.

We make our intarsia in a very particular way. Whenever possible, we avoid the use of any stains or dyes that would alter the color of the wood. Nature gives us an incredible selection of colors and textures. We prefer to showcase the natural beauty of wood instead of hiding it. Creating intarsia in this way can be difficult and requires a large variety of different wood species but the result is unmatched! We use wood much like a painter uses ink.
